In The Sugar Bowl Of Louisiana Plantation Scenes on line of Southern Pacific Sunset Route
Houston, Texas: Passenger Department Southern Pacific Sunset Route, Circa 1910. Wraps. 8 x 5.25", green wrappers with illustrations of sugar bowl and sugar cane plants, [36] pp, illustrations from photographs and from drawings. An unusual promotional booklet for the "Sunset Route" of the Southern Pacific Railway, which connected New Orleans and California. The booklet prints 24 photographic "plantation scenes," almost all depicting African American sugar cane workers and their families in Louisiana. These views are accompanied by text describing sugar cane cultivation and African American life on the plantations, alongside small drawings by M.B. Trezevant, which are generally racial caricatures. The language of the booklet is quite stereotypical and often outright racist. Five in OCLC. In excellent condition with mild fading to wrappers. Item #10505
