Little Club Cook Book

Long Beach, California: Press-Telegram, Printers, [1931]. Octavo, 9.25 x 6.25", stapled, illustrated wrappers, 42 pp. A cookbook by a Long Beach women's group founded to aid impoverished mothers during the Great Depression. From the forward: "Prompted by a desire to assist in the alleviation of human suffering occasioned primarily by conditions existing throughout the country during 1930-1931, a group of prominent Long Beach women organized The Little Club late in the fall of the latter year. Relief for the needs attendant upon motherhood in humble homes was the direct object of the organization, and once each week...members have gathered to prepare layettes and other articles required for the health and comfort of infants and mothers." Recipes are unattributed, but the forward notes that only the "best recipes" of club members were included. Among these are chop suey, chicken tamale pie, okra gumbo, India curry and rice, and more.
