Yearbook of Muhammad University of Islam No. 2
Chicago: 1970. Quarto, 13 x 9.75", red boards with white crescent moon and star to front cover and date "1970", 71 pp, numerous photographic illustrations. The 1970 yearbook of the Muhammad University of Islam No. 2, a Nation of Islam preschool through 12th grade school founded by Elijah Muhammad and located next to his Chicago headquarters. Established in 1934, it was the second school in the Nation of Islam system, and quickly became the flagship school of what was the first Islamic Black School System in the United States, providing an alternative to public schools for Black Muslim parents and students. The yearbook begins with the words "Justice, Freedom, Equality, Islam" emblazoned on the front endpapers in large letters. Next is a poem titled "Our Black Brother", followed by portraits of students and teachers, scenes of school life, religious messages, poetry written by students, and more. The yearbook is well illustrated with photos taken by photographer Herbert Muhammad, Sr, the son of Elijah Muhammad. Scarce, with only three holdings in OCLC for any similar yearbook, and no holdings for this particular yearbook. 1.5 inch wide vertical sticky stripe to rear cover, along with a series of abrasions and gouges to rear cover along this board, where apparently some type of adhesive was pulled off, else in very good condition.
