Octavo, dark purple cloth with black decoration and gilt lettering, 134, [4] pp. A collection of sketches "that represent the mode of life and habits of the people in Peking and the adjacent region, as seen during several years of personal observation and experience" (preface). The author was a suffragist and missionary in China, who was one of the first two women to run for statewide office in Rhode Island. The text emphasizes the lives of women and children in China. Sections include "Boat Life," "Homes of Poor and Rich", "Tobacco", "Opium," "Want and Poverty," "Saved from Suicide," "One Woman's Attempt to Read," "An Infant's Diet," "The Old Lady Who Never Sinned," and more.
