Item #13542 Circular Address. To the Citizens and Voters of Lawrence County

Circular Address. To the Citizens and Voters of Lawrence County

Lawrenceburg, Tennessee: 1874. Single leaf printed to recto only, 8.75 x 6". A scarce broadside from Reconstruction-era Tennessee, signed in type by J. Lum Chaffin, a Democrat of Lawrenceburg. The broadside solicits the opinions of local Democrats in regards to Chaffin's potential candidacy for County Court Clerk of Lawrence County, with Chaffin reluctant to splitting the vote among Democratic candidates: "At present we seem to have a triangular fight or contest. The Democratic or Conservative party having two candidates; and the Radical or Republican party, only one. This does not give the Democratic or Conservative party a fair chance, and I do not wish to have the blame of a defeat of the party charged against me, and therefore desire to submit the question to the conservative voters of Lawrence county, as to whether my worthy competitor Mr. Busby or myself shall be the candidate or whether they desire some other person to be the candidate." Not in OCLC. Foxing and creasing, else very good. Item #13542
