Durham, North Carolina: Service Printing Company, 1955. Quarto, blue pictorial stapled wrappers, 24 pp, photographic illustrations. Together with a leaflet program, [4] pp, laid in. Volume XXIII, No. 2, "Educational Issue" for the Second Quarter of 1955. A single issue of the quarterly periodical of the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, a historic African American life insurance company based in Durham. According to the introduction, this educational issue was published because of the recent landmark decision in Brown v. Board of Education: "Because of the turn of events involving an evolutionary change in the administration of the public school affairs in twenty-one of the forty-eight states of the United States, we are happy to again make available space in The Whetstone for expressions from a few of the outstanding leaders in the field of education" (1). This issue prints comments from the presidents of eight HBCUs regarding higher education, a 2pp illustrated expose on students at HCBUs, and articles on education and life insurance. Articles include "Your Social Security", by Miss Beulah Latta of Durham, and "The Citizen's Responsibility for Public Education," by William Brown of Durham. Laid in is a program for the 50th Anniversary Banquet of the company, held in Philadelphia in 1949. OCLC shows two dozen locations holding any issue of The Whetstone from 1924 onwards. In excellent condition with a hint of wear to covers. Item #13609
