U.S. International Exhibition. Historical Notes Concerning the Vegetable Fibres, Exhibited by Severino L. da C. Leite
New York: "O Novo Mundo" Printing Office, 1876. Octavo, printed wrappers, 16 pp, folding chart at end. A pamphlet on the "vegetable fibres" exhibited by a Brazilian man at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, offered as an alternative to cotton. The booklet was published at the printing office of "O Novo Mundo", a Portuguese language Brazilian newspaper that ran from 1870 to 1879. According to one scholar, "Brazil’s participation at the fair created translations of the nation for a foreign public that were retranslated for Brazilian readers through O Novo Mundo, a periodical published in New York from 1870 to 1879...the periodical recognized Brazil’s desire for modernity, critiqued how Brazilian officials wanted the nation to be seen, and questioned how models of progress from the United States would unfold in Brazil" (Brune, "Retranslating the Brazilian Imperial Project: O Novo Mundo’s Depictions of the 1876 Centennial Exhibition). Slight toning to pages, paper repairs to wrappers and several page gutters. Item #13766
