Ephemera Relating to the South Carolina Drug Store of M.J.D. Dantzler, M.D.

Elloree, South Carolina: Circa 1900. Broadside measuring 7.5 x 4.75" and four printed labels, each 2.5 x 1.25", each placed into corners on a single leaf measuring 8.5 x 11". The broadside and two of the labels are easily removable, while the other two labels are additionally pasted onto the leaf. The broadside advertises the services offered by M.J.D. Dantzler, M.D., a pioneering druggist and physician based in Elloree, South Carolina. The labels, meanwhile, were affixed to medicinal products offered by Dantzler: Insect Powder, Tincture of Gelsemium, Wine of Antimony, and Tincture of Nux Vomica. Dantzler's 1918 obituary notes that, in the "old days", he made his rounds on horseback, practicing in the Jamison section of Orangeburg County; later, he served in the Confederate army as a surgeon, and moved to Elloree around the year 1893 to open his drugstore.
